Ted Unit Z62442 was everything a child could want in a teddy bear. He was
perfectly stuffed for squeezing, soft fur just right for soaking up tears or
burrowing your face in, his stitching was firm and would last against even the
most rambunctious child, but most important of all, he had qualified top of his
class in Defence against Monsters.
A properly enchanted Ted Unit was the first line of defence
against the Dark. There was nothing Ted Unit Z62442 shouldn’t be able to
handle.
“I don’t think he’s ready.” Ted Commander Uno said,
examining the file. The Commander was an old bear, lovingly repaired more than
a few times, his fur worn through in places and a ever serious expression on
his face.
“You want to hold him back for another year?” Doll Commander
Vahid asked, flipping through her copy. “Didn’t we do that last year?” The
Dolls were considered support or ranged units, while Vahid herself looked like
she had never been in a battle, her red hooded cloak hid much.
Commander Uno frowned just a little bit, “No. Whatever he
needs isn’t in the classroom. If we don’t put him in the field soon we’re going
to lose him.”
“Then what do you suggest?” Wheeled Commander Satu asked,
The Wheeled were perhaps the most diverse of the Command, since it included
horses, boats and airplanes as well as the more mundane cars, trucks and fire
engines. Fast moving transport was a must in some places, now more than ever,
and the Toys couldn’t employ the same sort of teleportation as the Big Man.
Uno sighed, knowing they didn’t have time to be over
thinking this. Too many toys to assign, and the numbers grew every year.
“I don’t know, but I wouldn’t trust him not to go haring off
at the first sign of trouble.”
Vahid and Satu shared a look, before Vahid leaned forward, “He’s
not...” She hesitated, “a coward?”
“No!” Uno objected strongly, then more softly, “No, he’s not
a coward. If anything he’s too eager to fight, rushing in after glory.”
Vahid nodded, and Satu looked thoughtful. “You don’t trust
him to look out for the child.”
Uno nodded sadly.
Vahid hummed. The others held their silence for a moment as
she thought. “I have an idea.” She said
finally, “How would he react to a mystery?”
