Once the dark had been a place of safety to Freddie.
Nothing could hurt him there, nothing was scary.
Scary was white rooms, and bright lights, and Mags fading
away bit by bit.
Scary was watching week by week as Mags got paler and
weaker, watching Mummy get sadder, watching Daddy go distant.
The dark was safe. The dark was when Mags would whisper
silly stories in his ear, and make him giggle.
The dark was warm hugs, and quiet laughter and long held
secrets.
"I'm going away Freddie. Might not see you for a while.
Don't worry. I'll see you again someday. I'll wait for you."
The dark held no fear for Freddie.
He walked with confidence behind Chester.
"He'll protect you Freddie. Chester's the greatest
Bunny in the world."
Freddie didn't understand why Mags had to go away. Or why
Daddy went away.
It hurt looking at Chester, but he couldn't bare to give him
up.
He hadn't really believed Mags. Why would Chester protect
him? He was nothing special. Mags was special. Mags was his entire world.
The blade he held was bright. Far brighter than he expected.
Bunny's blade was awesome.
Chester was a dark smudge ahead.
"Trust me Freddie. One day you'll understand."
Mags was awesome.
But he didn't understand.
Why did she leave?
Why did everyone leave?
Well. Not Bunny. He was taken.
Freddie was going to get him back.
"Love you forever Freddie. Be strong. I'll be
watching."
