Chester was nervous.
He couldn't show it.
Freddie knew.
He was going to be in so much trouble later.
If they survived.
He was actually surprised the kid wasn't throwing a fit
about it. Most would have freaked out. Most had freaked out.
Not his Mags.
Apparently not her brother either.
He missed her so badly, every day a reminder of what he had
lost.
Freddie was a constant reminder of what he had lost.
Before, it had been painful, watching this pale shadow of
his girl.
Now, he wasn't sure what to think.
Freddie hadn't hesitated to go after his bear.
Freddie hadn't reacted fearfully to the dark. Apparently the
kid was braver than he thought. Maybe he wasn't just a shadow.
The kid was quiet, had always been quiet compared to the
bright ray of sunshine and joy his girl had been.
"Protect him Chess." The words circled around his
head.
I promised.
Nightmares circled them, staying well out of the circle of
light Bolt's sword cast.
Bolt's sword. Now wasn't that a terrible thing to be relying
on.
Chester grinned wilily, they were doomed if that light went
out, but that light burning so brightly gave him hope.
As long as it didn't go out, Bolt hadn't sunk into the
darkness. As long as it held steady Bolt was unbroken.
They descended deeper into the dark.
Chester knew they couldn't be attacked at any moment.
There could be thousands of shadows hidden just beyond
sight. Hundreds of Nightmares just waiting to tear the pair of them apart.
There were worse things in the dark than shadows and
nightmares.
There was monsters down here.
And the deeper they went, the further away from safety? The
worse it was going to be when they finally decided to attack.
He was going to die.
Freddie wasn't. Not if he could help it.
Bolt wasn't.
He refused to let them down.
Let the dark take him, it couldn't have what was his.
His blade flickered brighter.
