We were on the planet once known as Dune.
The wind still blew, the sound whistling through the abandoned
city.
I don’t know what happened to the people, their records
were dust in the wind as far as I could tell. The library had been full of the remnants
of scrolls, but unlike on the other Worlds the weather had done its job and
nothing was left legible.
My eyes flickered at Doofenschmirtz and Perry, it felt
odd to be responsible for individuals.
I hadn’t considered the full implications of recruiting
other people.
“You want to go home.” I started, Doofenschmirtz had been
ignoring me for a while now, but he looked up at this.
“Yes. Of course.” His eyes flickered over me, and for
once our eyes were level as he was sitting down while he worked. “Perry too.”
I sighed. “I can do that.” Rubbing at my head, “But it
won’t be safe to leave the way we came, and I’m not feeling up to tearing open
the fabric of the Universe today.”
Doofenschmirtz nodded, his eyes considering, “And what
would you suggest?”
I tugged on my hair, it had faded to a sandy silver
during the night, with streaks of pale blue. Not enough power to tear an
opening, not enough power to even find an opening, but if I knew where one
was...
“Find a doorway, and I will lead you home.”
Doofenschmirtz gave me his, let’s humour the crazy person
look, and gestured to the door, “I’m assuming you don’t mean that.”
I smiled and shook my head. “There are secret doorways on
every World. Places where reality wears thin and things can seep in.”
“Secret doorways...” Doofenschmirtz didn’t look anymore
convinced, “Like magic doors?”
“Sometimes...” I offered my hand, “Come on, I’ll show you
the bug factories, plenty of equipment there, even if it’s old.”
I hoped...
We were running out of time.
We couldn’t stay here.
I couldn’t do this by myself.
And Perry watched.
